Teeth Cleaning on St Kilda Road, Melbourne
Brushing and flossing every day are essential for good oral health, but even the best home routine can’t remove all plaque and tartar. That’s why regular professional teeth cleaning is an important part of keeping your teeth and gums healthy. Our catchment along the St Kilda Road corridor taking in Melbourne 3004, South Yarra, Albert Park and Middle Park is a health-aware, largely working-age community, and regular cleans fit naturally with a proactive approach to staying well. Nationally, around 55.3% of Australians hold extras (general treatment) cover, the type that funds dental*, which many patients use to help fund their routine scale and clean.
At Complete Dental Care, on St Kilda Road, our professional teeth cleaning appointments are designed to remove stubborn plaque and tartar, help reduce the risk of gum disease and tooth decay, and leave your smile feeling fresh. A regular scale and clean also lets us monitor your oral health and pick up potential problems before they become more serious.
What is professional teeth cleaning?
Professional teeth cleaning, often called a scale and clean, is a preventive treatment that removes plaque, tartar (calculus) and surface stains that can’t be removed through brushing and flossing alone. Over time, plaque hardens into tartar, which bonds to the teeth and can only be safely removed using specialised dental instruments. Left untreated, tartar can contribute to gum disease, bad breath and tooth decay, so professional cleaning helps maintain healthy teeth and gums while supporting your overall oral health.
Why is professional teeth cleaning important?
A routine clean offers benefits well beyond making your teeth look cleaner. Regular professional cleans can help remove plaque and hardened tartar, reduce the risk of gum disease, help prevent tooth decay and cavities, freshen your breath, remove surface stains from coffee, tea and other foods, and give us a regular opportunity to monitor your gum health. Combined with regular check-ups and good oral hygiene at home, professional cleaning is one of the more effective ways to help maintain a healthy smile over the long term.

What happens during a scale and clean?
A professional cleaning appointment is designed to be comfortable, gentle and tailored to your needs. Your appointment may include:
Oral health assessment. Before cleaning begins, your dentist or hygienist assesses the health of your teeth and gums, checking for signs of decay, gum disease or other concerns.
Scaling. Using specialised instruments, plaque and hardened tartar are carefully removed from above and below the gum line.
Polishing. Your teeth are then polished to remove surface stains and leave them feeling smooth which also makes it a little harder for plaque to build up again.
Fluoride treatment. Where appropriate, a fluoride treatment may be recommended to help strengthen enamel, reduce sensitivity and lower the risk of future decay.
Personalised oral hygiene advice. Every smile is different, so we’ll provide practical advice on brushing, flossing and other techniques to help you maintain healthy teeth between appointments.
The team behind your clean
Teeth cleaning at Complete Dental Care is provided by our dental hygienists, working alongside our general dentists as part of your overall care. Because a clean is often combined with your regular check-up, you may also see one of our dentists during the same visit, including Dr Nishant Chand (BDHSc, MDent), whose focus includes general and restorative dentistry, or Dr Simon Wong (BDSc Melb, MACNEM, FICCDE), whose focus includes preventative dentistry. Every member of our clinical team can assess your oral health and recommend the right cleaning schedule for your needs.
How often should you have your teeth cleaned?
For most patients, a professional clean every six months is recommended as part of a routine preventive program. Some people may benefit from more frequent appointments, particularly if they have gum disease, a history of frequent tooth decay, dental implants or complex restorations, orthodontic appliances, or certain medical conditions that affect oral health. Your dentist will recommend a schedule based on your individual needs.
Professional teeth cleaning and gum disease
One of the most important benefits of professional cleaning is helping to prevent gum disease. Plaque and tartar can accumulate around the gum line, leading to inflammation known as gingivitis. If left untreated, gingivitis may progress to periodontal (gum) disease, which can damage the supporting structures of your teeth. Regular scale and clean appointments, combined with good oral hygiene at home, play an important role in maintaining healthy gums.
Looking after your teeth between visits
To maintain the benefits of your professional clean, we recommend brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, flossing or cleaning between your teeth daily, limiting sugary foods and drinks, drinking plenty of water, and attending regular check-ups and cleans. These simple habits can help reduce plaque build-up and keep your smile healthy year-round.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a scale and clean hurt?
Most patients find a professional clean comfortable, though those with sensitive teeth or gums may notice some mild discomfort during scaling. Let your hygienist or dentist know if you’re feeling any sensitivity so they can adjust their approach.
How is a scale and clean different from a check-up?
A check-up focuses on examining your teeth and gums for signs of decay or disease, while a scale and clean focuses on removing plaque and tartar. The two are often combined into a single appointment for convenience.
Will my private health insurance cover teeth cleaning?
Many extras policies include benefits for preventive treatment such as a scale and clean, though coverage varies between funds and policies. It’s worth checking your specific policy, or asking our team for guidance before your appointment.
